Mopar ATF+4 automatic transmission oil is the OEM product of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (formerly Chrysler Group) for a wide range of automatic transmissions in vehicles from the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and RAM brands. The Mopar ATF+4 is characterized by its high-quality base oils in combination with a very high viscosity index (VHVI) and a unique additive package. If you are a user or vehicle owner and are worth using products from the Mopar Group brand for your vehicle, then the Mopar ATF+4 is just the right automatic transmission oil for your vehicle!
Wide range of applications also in addition to the automatic transmission
Mopar ATF +4 automatic transmission oil is designed to ensure a “fill for life” lubrication of the automatic transmission under normal driving conditions.
In addition to automatic transmissions, ATF +4 automatic transmission oil is also used in many manual transmissions, power steering (after 1998) and differentials. To use the appropriate lubricant, please always note the information in your vehicle manual or contact us. Our technical support staff will be happy to help you!
Suitable for many Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge vehicles – with exceptions!
Among many other vehicle models, Mopar ATF+4 is also used in 4- to 6-speed automatic transmissions, as well as older 3-speed converter transmissions of the Chrysler models:
- Chrysler (Grand) Voyager
- Chrysler 300
- Chrysler PT Cruiser
- Chrysler Sebring
In addition to a large number of Dodge vehicles of the models:
- Dodge Caliber
- Dodge Journey
- Dodge Nitro
- Dodge Avenger
- Dodge Challenger
- Dodge Charger
- Dodge Magnum
- Dodge RAM
also need vehicles of the Jeep models
- Jeep Cherokee
- Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Jeep Commander
- Jeep Compass
- Jeep Wrangler
an ATF+4 gear oil.
When choosing the right automatic transmission oil, please note the instructions in your vehicle manual. Especially in a large number of newer vehicles of the mentioned models, other automatic transmissions are installed in which no ATF+4 automatic transmission oil may be used!
Reverse compatible with ATF+, ATF+2 and ATF+3
Mopar ATF+4 is the successor to the previous products ATF+, ATF+2 and ATF+3, which are no longer available as an OEM product, as the ATF +4 automatic transmission oil is fully backward compatible.
The development work of the major car manufacturers on an automatic transmission oil, after initial efforts, which can be attributed until the 1940s, steadily increased in the 1980s. In addition to products from Ford, GM and Toyota, Chrysler presented Chryslerthe “ATF+” automatic transmission oil with the Chrysler MS-7176 specification. In line with the rapid technical development, the “ATF+” in 1993 and 1997 quickly follows the specifications Chrysler MS-7176D and Chrysler MS-7176E, which were introduced as “ATF+2” and “ ATF+3” automatic transmission oils. Significant for these two further developments of the original ATF+ was the improvement in the shear stability of these oils, i.e. the minimization of the loss of viscosity with increasing thermal stress.
The following shear losses emerge from the SAE Technical Paper 982674 from a 20-hour KRL shear test:
- Chrysler MS-7176D ATF+2: 32%
- Chrysler MS-7176E ATF+3: 14%
For immediate comparison, the test also cites results on the comparable specifications GM Dexron III and Ford Mercon V:
- GM Dexron III: 40%
- Ford Mercon V: 19%
The immense improvement in shear stability from ATF+2 to ATF+3 is due to the use of the then novel Group II base oil (more precisely to the different base oil classes can also be seen from our blog article on automatic transmission oil), as well as the shear-stable viscosity index improver (VI improver) developed by Lubrizol.
Once again, the ATF+4 oil with the Chrysler MS-9602 specification, which was filled into automatic transmissions from 1998 onwards, achieved an improvement. By using a Texaco Group III base oil and an improved viscosity index improver from Lubrizol Corporation, the ATF+4 automatic transmission oil has a shear loss of only 10%.
In addition to the renewed improvement of shear stability, the focus in the development of the ATF+4 liquid was also on improving the automatic transmission oil ATF+3 in terms of its longevity. In particular, the “Anti-Shudder Test” cited in the SAE Technical Paper 982674, which examines the behavior of an automatic transmission oil depending on its potential to cause jerks in the operation of the transmission, shows significant improvements here: While in an ATF+3 automatic transmission oil, after a mileage of 30,000 miles, a significant transmission jerk is recorded, an ATF+4 oil reaches the same value only after a mileage of 100,000 miles
How much ATF+4 does your vehicle need?
In general, this question cannot be answered. The required filling quantities vary by transmission and vehicle. Our customers therefore buy quantities between 5 and 10 L for a complete change of their automatic transmission oil. To find out how much automatic transmission oil is needed for your vehicle, we recommend that you use the vehicle manual.
- Recommended for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep automatic transmission
- Also for many manual transmissions and power steering after 1998
- Meets the manufacturer requirements ATF+, ATF+2,ATF+3
